Nicole & Aaron’s Tree Farm Engagement Session in Middleton, Wisconsin
Finally getting to meet Nicole and Aaron in person for their tree farm engagement session was seriously amazing. Their Fishing Engagement session was truly unique and memorable. In fact, the Fishing Engagement theme added an extra layer of significance to their story. We had met via video call months earlier, and right from the start, I got a clear vision of their wedding day, their relationship, and exactly what they wanted from their photos. Connecting with them early on was nothing short of awesome because it set the stage for a truly relaxed and personalized experience.
When you spend time getting to know your couples, the photo session feels more like hanging out with friends than a formal appointment. It allows for authentic wedding photos and engagement galleries that truly reflect who they are.
Exploring the Middleton Tree Farm
When I arrived at the tree farm in Middleton, I had the chance to meet the owners, and I fell in love with them instantly. They reminded me of my partner Justin and me, and how we might be when we get older. Their tree farm was massive, featuring acres upon acres of beautiful trees.
The area I chose for Nicole and Aaron’s session was perched on a hill. I just loved the natural lines of the landscape. There was an almost magical, endless feel to the rows of trees that seemed to stretch on forever. It provided the absolute perfect backdrop for capturing their relationship and suited the adventurous spirit of their Fishing Engagement session.
The specific reason for choosing a tree farm was deeply personal for the couple. Nicole and Aaron have actually started their own tree farm business. This location was a fantastic way to encompass that major part of their lives together. They make such a phenomenal team in business and in life. It is always so rad to see reflections of our own relationship in our couples. It just means we are finding our people, which makes me incredibly happy as a Madison wedding photographer.

Fishing and Fun at Indian Lake
After wrapping up at the tree farm, we headed over to Indian Lake. They brought along their fishing gear and spent some time casting lines into the water. I was incredibly hopeful that they would catch a fish, especially since one of their perfect day scenarios involves catching a record fish on a big lake. This really ties into their overall Fishing Engagement story.
Sadly, none of the fish were biting that afternoon. However, the lack of a catch did not dampen their spirits for a single second. The lake’s peaceful environment, combined with their playful banter, made for some fantastic, unposed moments. We just walked, talked, and enjoyed the beautiful outdoor scenery. It is these quiet, in-between moments that often make the most memorable and emotionally rich images
Humor, Resilience, and Real Life
Their sense of humor is a defining characteristic of their relationship. Aaron is a farmer, yet he is also a massive germaphobe. Nicole describes his personality as a mix of Adrian Monk from the television show Monk and Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother, all rolled into one person. As a germaphobe and a farmer, I find that contrast absolutely hilarious and hits close to home.
Nicole brings her own incredible resilience and humor to the table. As a breast cancer survivor, she has a prosthetic that she affectionately refers to as her chicken cutlet or jellyfish pad. She is incredibly open about it, willing to show anyone who asks to help spread breast cancer awareness. People often have interesting reactions when she casually mentions her chicken cutlet prosthetic, but she finds that sharing humorous stories helps others feel far more comfortable around a survivor. Oh, and she also eats about eighty percent of her food with ranch or some type of ranch seasoning.
Capturing the Pure Joy of Connection
When I asked them what they most wanted to capture during their session, their answer was simple but profound. They just wanted their relationship captured. They wanted to see what other people see when they look at them. Nicole mentioned that they sometimes feel like two goofs who do not know what they are doing, or two people who might not look like they belong together because of their contrasting personalities. As a result, these moments made their Fishing Engagement photos even more meaningful.
When photographing people, this is exactly the goal. I love being able to be a mirror to couples, showing them the pure love that radiates on their faces. Seeing their genuine joy is why I do this work. It is all about preserving memories and highlighting the authentic connection that makes their bond so special. It is not about stiff poses or forced smiles. It is about capturing two unique individuals who have decided to build their dreams and make memories together.
Looking Forward to the Wedding
I cannot wait until their wedding later this year. I am so excited to get to know more of their families and celebrate their next big step. Nicole and Aaron have already gone through so much together, proving their strength and devotion. I am absolutely thrilled for them to share the rest of their lives together.
