4 TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR FAMILY PHOTOS

January 4, 2023

Plan your family photos with less stress with these simple steps!

We all want those perfect family photos to hang in our living rooms, use on Holiday cards, and share with friends and family. But as you’re likely aware, getting those picture-perfect photos can be harder than you’d think. In today’s post, we’re sharing a couple of professional tips to help your family photo session go as smoothly as possible.

Plan your outfits

Though this tip tends to be top of mind for curated family photos, we want to reinforce how important it is. Planning your outfits ahead of time will help to keep your clothes nice and pressed before the day of your shoot. Plus, you have the creative freedom to coordinate different looks for a true family-friendly vibe. Want to wear all plaid for your holiday shoot? Go for it! Want to look put together in formal clothes? Do it! Whatever vibe you’re going for, plan ahead to minimize day-off wardrobe mishaps.

Envision the pictures you want

It can be really helpful for your family – and especially your photographer – if you already know the style of photos you want. This gives your photog a clear vision and saves you some time in the long run. No need to plan out every single detail of your session (that’s our job), but having a general idea of what you’re looking for ensures you’ll be happy with the end product. Do you like light and airy or dark and moody photos? Do you want an outdoor session or shots taken in the studio? Whatever you have in mind, your photographer can help you craft the perfect shots to capture your vision.

Be early & have a backup plan

When it comes to family sessions, time is a very important factor due to the number of people needed for the session. A good way to keep your session from running longer than planned is to show up a bit early and have backup plans for your day. Bring extra clothes or shoes because accidents happen! Plan for the sun or weather to not be in your favor and bring umbrellas or raincoats. Oh! And be sure to bring some snacks or drinks if you schedule a longer session.

Consider the kids (and pets).

Not every family session includes kids or pets. If yours does though, make sure to plan around them! As we all know, kids and pets can be unpredictable sometimes (psst – this is when the previous tip on having a backup plan really comes in handy). For the kids, bring extra clothes and snacks to keep them occupied and be sure to set expectations for a fun day of photos. For pets, make sure to bring a leash and water. At the end of the day, what happens, happens. Kids get rowdy, grumpy, and distracted, but sometimes that chaos leads to epic photos.

It’s worth it, we promise!

We know that planning a family session can be a little overwhelming sometimes. In fact, it might even feel like everything you so neatly planned goes exactly the opposite of how you wanted it to.
