Kleifarvatn Lake in Iceland Elopement on the fall equinox.
Amanda and Grant had their intimate ceremony in Iceland with some family and close friends on a cliff in the Kleifarvtn Lake area of Iceland. They had a super intimate judges chambers ceremony earlier this year that we also photographed. That day ended with pie, this day ended with a shot of Icelandic Whiskey straight from the bottle!
We flew over to Iceland with Amanda and Grant on the same plane. We didn’t plan this, it just happened. Having us arrive 3 days before the elopement day. The day we arrived was mainly chill and nap, catch up on time. Then Justin and I ventured out the site to scout. I was blown away with the view! The following day we took Amanda and Grant out to the location to show them. It was sooo much more beautiful than any of us imagined!
The day we scouted with them was super rainy and windy. We didn’t stay long at the location as we were getting soaked! But, man was it all worth it to show them in person before the big day! We headed back to The Swan House to warm up, change into dry clothes and take yet another well-needed nap.
The night before the elopement we went out to dinner at an amazing place handpicked by the couple. It was so awesome to sit down with everyone invited to the big day. All nine of us sat down and shared drinks and some of the best food we’ve all eaten. I couldn’t recommend the Matarkjallarinn – Food Cellar more if you are ever in Reykjavik.
The day of the ceremony started out with so much beautiful sun that slowly transitioned into typical Inclandic Fall weather. But, thankfully we got in enough portraits after their ceremony along the black sand beach that was below their ceremony site. Along, with some showcasing the beautiful landscape of Iceland.
In your own words describe your day from the night before, to waking up the next day!
We chose to celebrate the night before the wedding by going out to dinner with the whole crew. It was a cozy, intimate evening full of wonderful food and friendship. As we walked home, Grant and I started planning out the next morning which included doing laundry. We woke up in the morning and began our getting ready process. Hannah came over to help me with my hair which ultimately didn’t stay curly thanks to Iceland’s fine layer of mist! But I didn’t really care! I was just excited everything was happening! Everything was easy, and it felt right!
We were able to load up our car with our belongings and head out on time, but we definitely had to leave our clothes in the dryer because that timer was an illusion. The clothes still weren’t dry when we came to pick them up after the ceremony.
After arriving at the lake, we climbed to the spot we had selected the day before. Hannah wove together a wonderful narrative about our love, and Grant and I restated the promises we made to one another when we legally wed in Wisconsin back in January. To be surrounded by the folks with love in such a beautiful place was overwhelmingly incredible. It’s something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.
What was the greatest challenge in planning your wedding? Anything you felt least prepared for? What could you have done without?
The greatest challenge was definitely planning it in a place we had never been to. We did a lot of research and contacted a lot of folks in Iceland via email to figure out the perfect spot for the ceremony! We didn’t get to see it until we got there, but when we did, we knew we had made the right decision!
I would say we felt least prepared for the rain. Like, we knew there would be rain, but there was one day that was particularly brutal, and it happened to be the day we were location scouting. It was actually really fun, and we all took it in stride! But more rain gear would have been incredibly helpful!
What personal touches did you add to make your wedding your own?
We wrote the ceremony ourselves for both the Wisconsin and Iceland weddings. It was important to us that our thoughts and feelings be represented in the words that were being shared so we spent a lot of time coming up with the ceremony structures and writing the vows we would say to one another. We also prioritized comfort! Amanda wore hiking boots so she’d be able to traverse the terrain, and we incorporated an Icelandic wool blanket to feel true to space rather than using another cover-up!
Stay tuned for more from their adventure day! When I will share more!
