A Joyful UW Arboretum Proposal in Madison

Kevin and Margot’s UW-Madison Arboretum Proposal Session

There is nothing quite like the rush of a surprise proposal. The anticipation builds for weeks. The ring is hidden carefully in a pocket. The texts are exchanged in secret. For those dreaming of a uw arboretum proposal madison, the setting makes the moment even more magical. And then, in one beautiful split second, two lives change completely.

Helping Kevin plan his proposal to Margot was an absolute honor. He knew exactly where he wanted to ask the big question. He chose the very place they had their first date. It was a beautiful full-circle moment that made the entire experience deeply personal. We were heading for a hike at the UW Arboretum in a section we had never explored before. It set the stage for an unforgettable UW Arboretum proposal that Madison residents and nature lovers would dream of.

The Meaning Behind the Proposal Location

Choosing the right location for a proposal sets the tone for the entire event. For Kevin and Margot, the UW Arboretum holds a special place in their hearts. It is where their story began. Returning to the site of their first date brought a sense of beautiful nostalgia to this huge milestone.

Wisconsin summers are known for their vibrant greens and lively atmosphere. In the thick of summer, it was definitely humid. The bugs were rampant, just like you would expect in a typical Wisconsin forest. But we came prepared. With enough bug spray and a great attitude, the setting was simply lovely. The lush trees created a private, magical canopy for this huge moment in their relationship.

Planning the Perfect Proposal

Pulling off a surprise proposal takes a bit of coordination. A few weeks beforehand, I took a quiet stroll through this specific location. I wanted to ensure I knew exactly where to go. I looked for the best lighting, the most scenic backdrop, and the perfect hiding spots for Justin and me.

We love being thorough. I drew up a plan and sent it over to Kevin. I actually created a literal pirate map with an X to mark the spot. We planned exactly where they would walk from and where they would stand. We also mapped out where Justin and I would hide so it would not be obvious what was happening. Good planning gives the couple peace of mind. It allows the person proposing to focus entirely on their partner instead of worrying about logistics.

The Big Moment Margot Says YES!

When the day finally arrived, the excitement in the air was palpable. We were in our positions and waiting for the couple to approach the designated spot. Kevin was so incredibly excited to propose that he completely deviated from the timeline. He dropped down on one knee the absolute second he hit the wooden platform.

This had Justin and me running to get the shot. Thankfully, we are quick on our feet. We can snap photos while we run to catch those fleeting moments.

There may have been a bit of swearing from me under my breath as we scrambled to get into position. But we got the shot. The pure shock and happiness on Margot’s face made every single ounce of panic completely worth it.

Soaking in the Just Engaged Feeling

Margot and Kevin were absolutely stoked. The energy radiating from them was contagious. After she said yes and they admired the stunning ring, we took a little hike through the trails. They held hands, laughed out loud, and relished their brand-new adventure together.

Giving couples space to just be together right after the proposal is so important. We love stepping back and capturing those authentic, unposed interactions. After our little hike, we got a much-needed reprieve from the summer heat. We crossed the street to an open area and felt a wonderful cool breeze. The golden hour light began to peek through the clouds. We caught more of a gorgeous sunset while they played airplanes and simply enjoyed each other. We had so much fun celebrating with them.

Why Photographing Proposals is Pure Magic

People often ask why we love photographing proposals so much. After capturing these moments for over ten years, the answer is always the same. It is the pure, honest joy that lights up their faces.

Nothing is forced. Nothing is fabricated or guided in any way. A proposal is raw emotion unfolding in real time. The joy is simply beautiful to witness and photograph. Plus, I get to be a ninja spy who creates pirate maps with an X that marks the spot. It is seriously the best job in the world. The UW Arboretum is one of my favorite places to photograph year-round because it always offers a stunning natural backdrop for these wildly amazing, emotional milestones.
