Bring your pup along! Dogs are welcome on the Capitol grounds as long as they’re on a leash. Please clean up after them to keep the area neat for everyone. For casual family shoots, no permit is needed since it’s a public space.
2. State Street
This is for the family that loves energy and color. State Street isn’t about nature. It is about the city. We can use the colorful storefronts, the textured brick walls, and the hustle of the pedestrian mall to create photos that feel alive.
It is a great way to capture a fun afternoon out. Maybe we can grab some ice cream or bubble tea as a prop. The vibe here is “city but charming,” and it is perfect if you want photos that feel modern and full of personality. You can also do these locations AND the Capitol!

Since it’s a public street, your dog is absolutely welcome! Just remember it can get crowded, so if your dog gets anxious around lots of people or other dogs, it might not be the best spot for them. No permit is needed here either, just enjoy navigating the bustling street and dodging pedestrians, which is all part of the fun!
3. Memorial Union Terrace
You cannot get more iconic Madison than the Terrace. Those sunburst chairs and the view of Lake Mendota are legendary. This spot screams summer. It is colorful, relaxed, and cheerful.
We can get shots by the water with the sailboats in the background or hang out by the colorful chairs. It is a great location if you want your photos to feel like a happy memory of a perfect summer day.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the Terrace itself, so if bringing your pet is a must, stick to the lakeshore areas. Additionally, professional photographers must obtain a permit.

6. Allen Centennial Garden
This place is a hidden gem right on the UW campus. It feels like stepping into a storybook. The garden is small but divided into distinct sections, including an English garden and a Japanese garden.

7. UW–Madison Arboretum
