Ida and Reuben’s Intimate Elopement in Madison, WI

There are some places that never stop taking your breath away, no matter how many times you walk through them. The Wisconsin State Capitol is one of those places. It is hands down one of my favorite spots in Madison to photograph elopements, and a state capitol wedding feels even more special every time I get to work with the same judges here. What makes it work so well is the intentionality. Every couple we bring here gets to choose their exact spot because this building has so many layers, and we want every couple to experience it in a way that feels uniquely theirs. How It All Started: Beer Gardens and Good Conversation

Ida and Reuben met online, but their real story began the moment they sat down together at a beer garden for their first date. A couple of beers, an easy conversation, and two people who genuinely wanted to keep talking to each other. Ruben’s first impression of Ida? She was someone he simply did not want to stop talking to. And Ida? Her first impression was great, but her second one was even better.

That right there tells you everything.

Ruben loves Ida’s caring nature, the way she shows up for everyone around her, and yes, the fact that she puts up with his bad jokes. He says she makes his life more meaningful, and you can feel that when you watch them together. Ida, on the other hand, loves Ruben’s patience and kindness, and the way he can always make her laugh. She describes him as a true partner who shows his love every single day and fully embraces the beautiful absurdity of life. That kind of partnership is rare, and it is the most wonderful thing to witness through a camera lens.

Why Madison, Why the Capitol for their Elopement?

Ida grew up in Madison. Her parents still live here. So when they started thinking about where to get married, the Capitol felt like a natural answer. It is stunning, carries personal meaning, and, on a warm summer day, offers something many outdoor venues cannot: a gorgeous indoor option that keeps everyone comfortable. They also knew they wanted something small and intimate. Big traditional weddings were never their style. Portraits Around the City: Capitol Grounds, Allen Centennial Gardens, and Eno Vino

After the ceremony, we took our time exploring some of my absolute favorite spots in the city.

The Capitol grounds themselves offer so much to work with. There is always something new to find depending on the light and the angle, and Ida and Reuben were naturals in front of the camera. They held hands for most of the day. It was just what they did, effortlessly and without thinking about it, and it made every photo feel genuine.

From there, we made our way to Allen Centennial Gardens, a spot they had chosen themselves and one I genuinely love at any time of day or year. It brought something softer and more organic to their day, and it balanced beautifully with the grandeur of the Capitol.

Then came the AC Hotel balcony at Eno Vino, and wow, it never disappoints. The view from up there, overlooking the rotunda and the sweep of downtown Madison, is the kind of thing that makes you stop and just take it in for a second. It is one of my favorite city views in all of Madison, and it was the perfect note to end the portrait portion of the day on.

The Details That Made It Them

One of my favorite small moments from the day? A family member served as their driver and made sure the car was running, with the air conditioning set to full blast, so everyone could cool off between locations. It was such a thoughtful, caring gesture that fit perfectly with the tone of the whole day. Low-key, warm, and full of love.

That is exactly who Ida and Reuben are. Undoubtedly, their state capitol wedding reflected all the love and care they share.
