Winter Elopement on Frozen Lake in Illinois
A laidback Crystal Lake, Illinois Elopement just blocks from their home! Even though they had to make a last-minute change to their day, I have to say that it was an AMAZING replan! Invited over a few friends and family, they all came as they were.
We were meeting at their home, where they set up adorable tables and chairs for their dinner celebration. Their dogs greeted everyone as they arrived. It was the best way to be welcomed into a home on a wedding day! When everyone arrives, we made the short walk down the road. Arriving at Crystal Lake, we found the perfect ceremony location on the edge of the beautifully frozen lake!
Margaret’s brother officiated their wedding with a rad custom ceremony and mini-speech! I adore it when family officiates so much!!! We brought them all into their new adventure with mini sparklers and music!
They then had their first dance on the frozen lake with everyone surrounding them! It was pretty damn awesome! Then we take some amazing sunset photos with the couple on that frozen lake!
More people need to get married don frozen lakes!!!
Now let’s get to know them a bit more! As they are pretty damn awesome!
What is your proposal story?
We had been discussing marriage + what it meant to us for a few months. We had decided that it was something we both wanted but were unsure of the logistics of when + how. In September 2022, we were camping at Devil’s Lake State Park and had the idea that it would be so cool to have a camp out/wedding weekend there. We told our friends and family and picked out rings a month or so later.
Ryan, what do you love most about Margaret?
I love Margaret’s variety. She has the drive to learn and have her head in so many different things. She’s taught me a lot and always keeps me on my toes. Her ability to dream has pushed me to try new things and expand my horizons. She makes my future more exciting than ever!
Margaret, what do you love most about Ryan?
I love Ryan because of his kind and gentle disposition. He does not have a mean bone in his body. When he communicates, it’s always from a place of care + understanding. He truly wants to be supportive and non-judgmental in all situations.
What would your perfect Sunday be together?
While Margaret eases into the day, drinking coffee and journaling, Ryan is up n’ at em ready to go workout. After each finish with their morning routine, they convene to make breakfast while listening to Buena Vista Social Club. In the afternoon, they take turns doing their laundry and head out to do something outdoors – either a hike with the dogs or out on the boat for a Sunday cruise. Sal’s Pizza for dinner!
What memory stands out most from your wedding day
Margaret – Finding out I was pregnant. Convincing myself, I was being “paranoid” then seeing the word “positive” on the test and running out to the living room to tell Ryan and the both of us just hugging + crying happy tears.
Ryan – Having all my friends + family at a place that is so special to us because it’s where Margaret and I built our relationship.
In your own words describe your day from the night before your wedding to waking up on your first day MARRIED?
We were off work since we were initially supposed to be in Cancun that weekend. We hung out at home, Ryan gave Margaret a back rub before going to bed, and he stayed up to watch TV, following her to bed a couple of hours later. Like most nights in the Cordes house!
On the wedding day, Ryan and Margaret took turns working out before heading to their first ultrasound. Margaret was very nervous since she was still early in the pregnancy and wasn’t sure how things would go. After hearing the heartbeat, they both had a sigh of relief and were ready to enjoy the time with their friends and family. They were both pleasantly surprised at how good the weather was that day – it had been below freezing for several days.
For a day in January, sunny and upper 30s made for a beautiful day. They loved hanging out at home, chatting and laughing with friends. Their guests slowly left until only a couple of close friends left. Knowing how much Margaret loved sparklers, a handful of them went outside and lit more sparklers before heading home for the night.
The next day, tired from the day’s excitement before, Margaret binged watched Downton Abbey, and Ryan took the dogs for a run. Easy day at home.
What personal touches did you add to make your wedding your own?
It was being at the lake! Crystal Lake is such a special place to us. As a “covid couple” our first summer together, we basically spent every weekend there, just the two of us. We really got to know each other on that lake and still spend tons of time there.
What advice do you have for couples planning their wedding day?
Stop trying to make other people happy and do what feels right for you and your future spouse.
