Monona Terrace Wedding Ceremony at Blue Hour

The sky over Madison turned a deep and electric shade of indigo just as Lindsey and Nick sealed two decades of friendship with a kiss. The air on the Monona Terrace rooftop held a quiet magic that you only feel when two people are perfectly meant for each other. Surrounded by their absolute favorite people, they leaned into a night filled with genuine laughter and pure connection. It was the kind of celebration that reminds you exactly why documenting love is so rad.

Two Decades in the Making

Their story begins in a high school chemistry class. Nick was the cool guy with a guitar, a snowboard, and that classic shaggy hair that flipped out on the sides. Before she even had her driver’s license, Nick was giving Lindsey rides to school. Lindsey thought he was incredibly cool. Meanwhile, Nick harbored a massive crush. He thought Lindsey was cute, smart, and funny. They bonded over the same music, movies, and shows.

Fast forward almost two decades, and that teenage connection blossomed into a fiercely loyal partnership. When asked what keeps them falling in love, their answers are incredibly intentional. Nick says Lindsey has the personality he likes best of anyone he has ever met. She is quirky, funny, smart, and makes him feel completely comfortable. Lindsey loves Nick’s endless patience and deep kindness. He cares deeply for his people and makes her feel completely safe. They are two easygoing people who are very different but complement each other flawlessly.

The Wedding Vibe and Aesthetic

Lindsey and Nick wanted their wedding to reflect who they are as a couple. Their vision was simple but beautiful. They wanted to throw a really fun party with their loved ones that felt inclusive and comfortable without any drama.

They chose Monona Terrace for its classic Madison aesthetic. The venue provided everything they needed in one place, which made the planning process incredibly smooth. The ceremony took place on the expansive rooftop. Later in the evening, the reception moved to a stunning room with windows. Even though it was nighttime and the lake was hidden in darkness, the bike trail below glowed, creating a mesmerizing urban backdrop.

A Story-Driven Timeline of the Day

Getting Ready at The Hilton Downtown Madison WI

The morning started with a calm, grounded energy. Lindsey and Nick got ready, surrounded by a wedding party filled with the most amazing people. Throughout the morning, their friends said the most beautiful things about the couple. They spoke endlessly about how inclusive and kind Lindsey and Nick are. Hearing that kind of praise is simply beautiful.

The First Look at the Madison State Capitol

Anticipation built as we set up the first look. Both Lindsey and Nick mentioned this was one of their most highly anticipated moments of the day. When Nick finally turned around to see Lindsey, the emotion was palpable. It was a private, quiet moment before the beautiful chaos of the celebration began.

Portraits at the Capitol and Monona Terrace Walkway

We spent some time walking around the Capitol for portraits. My approach to portraits is always laid-back and natural. I want you to feel like you are just hanging out with a friend who happens to have a camera. Did I mention it had to be fu!? A hell of a lot of fun!

We captured some stunning, editorial shots as the sky darkened. I always tell my couples that I’ve got your back, and we made sure to get those epic, cinematic shots without keeping them away from their party for too long.

The Ceremony on the Rooftop of Monona Terrace at Blue Hour

The rooftop ceremony was nothing short of breathtaking. The blue hour light wrapped around them as they exchanged vows. The most anticipated moment of the day finally arrived when they shared their first kiss as a married couple. It was a triumphant, beautiful moment set against the Madison skyline.

Reception and Dance Floor

The reception was a total blast. Nick was absolutely ready for the dance floor, and the energy in the room was electric. Having both of their families together with all their friends created a joyous, celebratory atmosphere. Let’s freaking do this, they said, and they truly did.

What Felt Timeless AF

The way Nick looks at Lindsey is timeless AF. There is a deep, abiding comfort between them that translates beautifully on camera. Their connection is completely natural and unforced.

The rooftop offers incredible natural light during the late afternoon and early evening. If you can time your ceremony or portraits during golden hour or blue hour, the photos will be spectacular.

Take advantage of the window-lined rooms for your reception. Even at night, the city lights provide a warm and dynamic background.
